In case of Radiological and Nuclear (R/N) emergencies, fast and timely detection of the individual absorbed dose levels is of paramount importance for sorting out unaffected subjects from those requiring medical intervention. Different physical techniques have been used for the dose assessment from the radiation damage induced in biological tissues or in common-place materials. In this work Photo-Stimulated Luminescence (PSL) technique was applied to inexpensive personal objects that people usually have in their bags/pockets (cigarettes, snacks, paper handkerchiefs, banknotes). The literature states encouraging results obtained with such objects; the novelty of this work is represented by the instrument proposed for the analyses: a low cost, portable system usable in situ for rapid tests (about 60s) on samples as received. The preliminary results obtained with cigarette tobacco and salty snacks are reported here. The study was supported by NATO Science for Peace and Security Programme, grant No. G5684.

Fattibene (Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Italy), M. Vojnić-Kortmiš (Ruđer Bošković Institute, Croatia), M.C.
